Thank you for your interest in the Fashion Jewelry Trade Association (FJTA)
FJTA was formed to promote and protect the interest of suppliers and retailers offering fashion jewelry to the public. The association is a not-for-profit LLC corporation.
Currently, the issue of lead content in jewelry is under legislative consideration in New York, Minnesota, Illinois and Michigan. The cities of Chicago and Baltimore are also considering ordinances.. Several other states are reviewing this question. The US Consumer Products Safety Commission has accepted a petition from the Sierra Club and may soon establish national standards for materials content in childrens jewelry. Hopefully the federal regulations will not allow stricter state or city standards.
FJTA has retained Lobbyists have been retained in New York,Michigan, California, Minnesota and Illinois. We will also be represented in Washington D.C.
The goal regarding lead content legislation relating to jewelry is to protect the public while protecting the industry’s ability to conduct business. This effort is expensive. We need to retain scientific and legal experts and travel to state capitols to testify at committee hearings that will draft legislation. The cost to negotiate the California legislation alone approached two million dollars.
In order for the fashion jewelry industry to make its voice heard by lawmakers and regulators, the Fashion Jewelry Trade association was formed to create a unifying and supportive force in our industry. The cost of these efforts will be minimal if many fashion jewelry firms join the FJTA. When we testify, the number of members we represent becomes very important.
In addition, FJTA is exploring the creation of lead testing facilities for members, or a volume discount program with an existing laboratory that would expedite the processing of member tests and minimize the cost.
The Association will consider other matters of interest to the industry at the suggestion of members or when relevant issues arise. The possibility of group product liability insurance is being explored.
